The River – The primary obstacle was threading fiber optic conduits through a one-step-high deck while keeping a perfect finished look intact
To address this, I lowered the joists directly beneath the River Inlay and devised a removable backer frame using 3⁄4-inch plywood. This innovative approach allowed me to securely attach the river inlay boards while also enabling me to create a precise dado channel for the flex nosing material, which represents the riverbanks. Once the channel was cut into both the deck and the river material, I could easily remove the entire river unit to thread the fiber optics through without compromising the structure.
After successfully routing the fibers, the river was laid back down into its designated spot.
The river’s inlay and fiber optic lighting continues flowing down, through the fascia and splashes onto the rock path with blue light.
Additionally, I incorporated a hidden access door for maintenance, ensuring that the fiber optic system remains functional without disrupting the aesthetic. The result is a breathtaking Fiber Optic River, featuring a subtle glistening effect and a gentle current that captures the essence of flowing water, seamlessly blending art and engineering.

- This pergola creates atmosphere over a bluestone patio where one can enjoy a roaring fire.
- The massive stone fireplace is guarded by a gargoyle that was salvaged from a Yale University construction site.
- Pergola beams are Azek-wrapped over rectangular aluminum tubing and provided by INTEX Millwork Solutions
- 4 x 4 steel tubing supports the structure and is encased in 12” permanent columns.

Partner: Advantage Lumber
We started with a deck off the kitchen for dining and enjoying a glass of wine, partially roof- covered with an open area to soak up some sun.
From the deck, we cascade down steps to the bluestone patio, complete with an outdoor kitchen, fire pit area, and a massive ipe pergola. Incorporated into the pergola are infrared heaters, lighting, and paddle fans.
The wood-burning fireplace and the heaters create the perfect environment for watching sports outside well into the cooler months.
The deck is ipe on treated framing. EPDM roofing dropped between the joists allows for waterproofing under the deck and protects the frame.
The pergola is also ipe. The main support beams are 6” x 12” x 26’ and the rafters are 3” x 8”
