- We began the custom inlay process by sketching out a detailed design, presenting it to the homeowners to ensure it matched their vision and expectations.
- Once approved, we created the inlay in our workshop before installation, allowing us to refine each cut and confirm that every piece fit perfectly within the pattern.
- Using contrasting tones of decking boards, we crafted an intricate design that would serve as the deck’s focal point, adding visual depth and character.
- Shaping each piece to fit required precise cuts and a steady hand to maintain clean lines and achieve seamless alignment.
- The process was challenging, as even minor misalignments would disrupt the pattern, so we used alot of specialized tools to guarantee exact cuts and shapes.
- This process allowed us to install the inlay on-site with confidence, bringing a unique, handcrafted touch to the deck that transformed the backyard into a standout space. It is a truly a piece of art

The first type of inlay is the tri-color band that frames both decks. This inlay consists of 3 separately milled pieces of decking, 1.25″x.5″ each. A 1/2″ recess was routered out of the deck 2″ back from the edge of nosing. This created a bed for the milled banding to be glued and pressed into.
The next type of inlay needed a process invented for it to work. The challenge was threading fiber optic conduits through a one-step-high deck………. By lowering the joists directly under the River Inlay, I devised a removable backer frame of 3/4 ply, allowing to secure the river inlay boards to a removable river unit. This allowed me to dado a precise consistent channel (cutting into both main decking material and river material) for the flex nosing material to be layered precisely into, which represents my riverbanks and then remove the river unit to then thread my Fiberoptics through. When done, the river gets laid back down.
The river’s inlay continues flowing down, through the fascia and splashes onto the rock path with blue light. A hidden access door for maintenance was added to the stunning Fiber Optic River, featuring a subtle glistening and current effect.
