In partnership with Lainie Sleppin of Decks & Docks, Nick Stevens and I recently led a 3-stop Legacy Decks Academy Business Masterclass Roadshow, with two events in New Jersey and one in Long Island. Designed specifically for deck builders, our goal was to provide hands-on, real-world business strategies to help builders scale profitably, hire smarter, and sell more effectively.
Each stop drew 25–40 builders, and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Over the course of each 3-hour session, we covered:
- How to close more jobs using a design-first sales process
- How to recruit and keep A-player team members
- How to increase revenue by selling fewer, more profitable jobs
“Attending the Legacy Decks Academy event was an eye-opening experience for our business,” said Megan from Decks by Murray. “The insights and strategies gave us a clearer vision for growth and success. It encouraged us to dream big and take our deck-building business to the next level.”
The event wasn’t just theory—we equipped attendees with the exact templates, checklists, and tools we use inside Legacy Decks, including:
- The Deck Builder’s Scaling Model
- Our 2-Page Business Plan Template
- The Markup & Margin Calculator
- Our proven Hiring Matrix
According to Alan Butterfield, VP of the Northeast Region at Decks & Docks: “We wanted to help our contractors grow, and we found a great partner with Legacy Decks Academy. The takeaways from these events were very positive. Chris and Nick brought real-world problems and real-world solutions that apply to any contractor building a deck—or a dock.”
As Nick shared: “Speaking at this event was a privilege. The energy in the room was electric—builders came to engage, challenge themselves, and grow. This wasn’t just another industry meetup—it was a rallying point for professionals serious about building better businesses.”
At Legacy Decks Academy, our mission is to help builders become better business owners. Whether you’re building decks, docks, or outdoor living spaces—success comes from systems, strategy, and structure. We’re honored to partner with Decks & Docks and grateful to NADRA for continuing to spotlight efforts that raise the standard across our industry.
